Chris’s Path to Building Independence and Skills Through Volunteering

Over the past twelve months, Chris has dedicated his time to volunteering for several organizations in his hometown of Branford. He is working towards his goal of obtaining competitive employment, all while positively impacting his community!
In January, Chris began volunteering one day a week with the Community Dining Room, where he helps with dishwashing duties, including handwashing pots and pans, running the commercial dishwasher, and putting away clean dishes. Inspired by his experience there, he later added a second volunteer day at the BH Cares Clothing Bank, where he initially received support from Lumibility staff to organize and hang clothes. Since October, Chris has taken on this responsibility independently, showcasing his growth and confidence.
Chris has also contributed his time to the Branford Parks and Recreation Department. He volunteered at the Community House, assisting with pickleball check-ins, and spent the summer working at the Hospice Pool, helping with guest check-ins for swimming sessions.
In addition to his role as a dedicated volunteer, Chris often walks to his volunteer positions or independently uses the Greater New Haven Transit District bus. These experiences support his community and help Chris continue developing valuable employment and communication skills.
We are so proud of Chris’s progress this past year and look forward to seeing his continued growth on his employment journey!
