Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Day

Lumibility had a great time participating in the 2nd Annual Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Day at the beautiful Camp Harkness. The event was hosted by the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services. This much-anticipated event is a joyful celebration of inclusion, community, and the remarkable individuals we serve every day.

What is Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Day?

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) Awareness Day was observed on March 23rd this year. It’s a day dedicated to supporting, advocating for, and celebrating individuals with I/DD and their families. This important day highlights the achievements, talents, and unique contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. While also raising awareness.

Jamie Martin, our Assistive Technology Manager, and Chrissy Racho, our Marketing and Communications Manager, proudly represented Lumibility. They embraced our mission to Enhance Skills and Transform Lives of All Individuals with Differing Abilities by connecting with individuals, their families, and friends at the event. Individuals from our Westbrook Enrichment Program also joined in the fun. They participated in engaging activities such as exploring the sensory garden and enjoying a scenic train ride to the beach. Moreover, they danced with DJ Joe and checked out the food trucks. It was a joyful and memorable day, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s Annual Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Day!

More about Camp Harkness!

Camp Harkness is a state park and camp operated by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) to create accessibility to nature for people with disabilities. The park was originally part of the Harkness Estate and was dedicated by Mary Harkness for this purpose in her will. This allowed Camp Harkness to begin.

Any resident of the state of Connecticut with a permanent disability is eligible to become a passholder at Camp Harkness. All passholders (with up to 5 guests) may access the camp for day-use any time of year from sunrise to sunset. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the beach is open for swimming from 9am- 5pm. Passholders may also reserve picnic tables by the beach and tent sites. These can be reserved for overnight stays.

Year-round, Camp Harkness collaborates with DDS affiliates, volunteer groups, non-profit agencies, and many organizations throughout Connecticut. They host a wide variety of events together.
