Phoenix’s Journey with Kidsteps Birth to Three Program
Phoenix began his Birth to Three journey through the Kidsteps Birth to Three Program in February 2024 at just 14 months old after being diagnosed with a communication delay. At his initial evaluation, his mom shared that Phoenix was only saying “yeah” in different ways to communicate.
With the help of his Kidsteps Birth To Three therapist, who visited twice a week, Phoenix made steady progress, even through challenging times. When the family was displaced by a fire and living in a hotel for several months, they remained dedicated, meeting weekly with the Kidsteps’ therapist to continue working on his communication goals.
Together, they discovered what motivated Phoenix most: Sesame Street, Mickey Mouse, music, and block building, which later grew to include Winnie the Pooh, sand, and outdoor play. With Kidsteps’ support, his mother learned to advocate for Phoenix, confidently enrolling him in outpatient speech and ABA services and coordinating care with his pediatrician.
During his transition planning meeting, his mom successfully advocated for a half-day preschool program with speech and special education supports. Today, Phoenix can express his feelings, make choices, ask for help, give hugs, name family members, and tell his mom, “I love you.”
As Phoenix begins his journey in preschool with New Haven Public Schools, his family is deeply grateful for Kidsteps’ support every step of the way.
